Staff Room Stories is based on the
experiences of a supply teacher named John Caplis. The
show deals with his contempt for the kids who have left a giant mental scare etched on his
memory. The story begins from the day Caplis
entered the teacher training course and how initially he was filled with excitement and
enthusiasm for the job. In his mind he
believes he can inspire the kids hes teaching. However
after a few short days in the job he re-evaluates the whole mission of inspiring the kids. His re-evaluation occurs after he is handed a
timetable for the most mental class in the school.
Despite this Caplis still believes he can be
like Professor John Keating in Dead Poets Society and have the kids reciting lines of
Heaney and Wordsworth. However the kids have
another idea and rip out the pages of their textbooks to light mini fires in the class. After this crash course Caplis moves on to other
tours of duty, which include Luton Town and Kent in England.
Here Caplis realises just how much he hates kids who end every sentence with
in it and mix Stalin up with some fat bloke who used to be on the telly.
In terms of audience interaction the show
will include some class work on the part of the audience members. Their first task will
involve having to write a composition followed by a questions and answers session. Topics for the composition will include such
uplifting titles as My Worst Experience and What I would do if I lost my job! If the
class/audience are having any difficulty with the task there will be a whiteboard on hand
to help them with their task.
Overall the show will be a series of
anecdotes which will cover Capliss teaching career to date and the subjects he has
claimed to teach such as History, Geography, English and the dreaded Religion, which he
claims is the toughest gig in the school. Each
anecdote will be filled with heart felt raw emotion and an honesty on the part of the
performer, which may involve the odd F word here and there for good measure. Caplis says the use of the F word is
vital for the overall effectiveness of the show. This
show is a must for teachers and ex teachers who are now alcoholics or just people in
general who like to get up on front of strangers and peel their soul like an onion. |
