Piff the Magic Dragon's deadpan delivery was a highlight... - The

Good evening. My names Piff the magic dragon. You might have
heard of my older brother. Steve.
One of the most celebrated and successful
magicians on the circuit has traded tailcoat for dragon costume and called himself PIFF.
John van der Puts new show PIFF-TACULAR
has surprised and enchanted London cabaret crowds and the Brighton Festivals
Spiegeltent, and was a finalist at Hackney Empires New Act of the Year.
Van der Put is an award-winning and sought-after
contemporary magician, most recently performing at Sir Ian McKellens 70th
birthday party, so the mythical beast fetish has come as a shock to many. Hes
currently the International Brotherhood of Magicians Close-Up Champion and placed
second for the Magic Circle Magician of the Year in the same category. Hes
created magic for Punchdrunk/National Theatres Faust, Heston
Blumentals Fat Duck restaurant, celebrity wizard David Blaine, and
product launches for corporate giants including Pepsi, LG and Dunhill.
So whats the whole dragon thing all about? One
day I decided Id had enough of schlepping round corporate dinners and fancy
restaurants and out Piff came. Hes how I used to feel on the inside at those gigs.
Same monkey, different suit, he explained to Time Out earlier this
year.
To the industrys surprise, performances in
Brighton, Buxton and London have quickly gathered a following for high-end corporate
showman van der Puts reincarnation as a sullen, sarcastic, yet strangely charming
performing dragon. Appearing as par of the Laughing Horse Free Fringe for a
credit-crunched festival, PIFF-TACULAR wil offer the best value for money in Edinburgh and
a chance to watch one of the most experienced magical showmen in the UK rediscover a genre
in his own unique way. |
