jaik.jpg (7978 bytes)“THE AUDACITY OF HOPELESSNESS” is the 3rd one-man show from Fringe regular and ITV's 'Stand-Up-Britain' finalist, Jaik Campbell, who speaks from the heart to explore hopelessness, confidence and finding happiness in today's society.

Natural disasters, wars, failing economies, global warming, getting older, failed relationships: it’s easy to feel lost and hopeless sometimes and unable to change things and most of the time, the sad fact is we can’t.  Inspired by US Senator Barack Obama’s book, “The Audacity of Hope”, Jaik comedically examines various subjects and concludes how essentially nothing can be changed, but understanding fear and becoming more self confident helps.

Jaik says: ‘Without wanting to sound too depressive or political, the fact is the World is going through a fairly hopeless period.  As John Cleese said in Clockwise, “It’s not the despair, I can take the despair. It’s the hope I can’t stand.” So surely hopelessness is better than hope?  When you’re hopeless you don’t care, and when you don’t care, the world is an easier place to live in.  It’s only when you start caring that you have hope, which can lead to frustration and despair, so perhaps it’s best just not to care at the start.    So maybe hopelessness is the key to life.  It’s certainly my only hope.’

Jaik performs stand-up regularly in London. He was a finalist on ITV1’s Stand-up Britain (2002), a regional-finalist in the BBC New Comedy Awards (2003), and a Hackney Empire finalist (2004).  He was also in BBC2’s Open All Hours Sitcom Review (2004).

"A terrific comedian"  Bruce Dessau, Evening Standard, January 2008

"A gifted comedian.  Would be great to see him return to the fringe next year" Chris Wilson, The Stage, August 2007

“Jaik has a smart way with a one-liner. It might take a while to come out, but it is usually worth it.” Bruce Dessau, Evening Standard, February 2007
