Four worlds. Four
girls. Four secret desires. Dark, twisted tales, inspired by classic stories from the
Brothers Grimm. This distorted reflection of society brings to light unspoken issues
through a union of theatre, poetry and live music.
Grim is a
forty-minute contemporary adaptation of the original Grimm Tales.
The play tells the stories
of four girls and their secret desires within an enchanting fairy-tale world. The tale is
told through the eyes of the Narrator, a twisted and dark character who relishes in the
pain and anguish of others. The story begins with Red Riding Hood; a painful look at
teenage prostitution and girls who crave sexual experience before they are ready. It then
moves to the story of Rumplestiltskin, which explores the womens liberation movement
in the 20s. Snow White takes a raw approach to the influence of the media and
societies pressure to be the fairest of them all, through the eyes of the girl
with the Ever growing waist. The cabaret ends with the woeful tale of
Cinderella (Ashputtle), a girl who falls for the deadest of men.
A live band
that plays original music, composed for Grim, accompanies the performance.
Established
in September 2007, the Goldsmiths Drama Society is comprised of a group of 25 e nthusiastic students
from a wide range of courses. The group developed their skills during the beginning
term via performing workshops, lead by various professionals from institutions such as
RADA and Sylvia Young Theatre School, as well as contemporary dance specialists and stand
up comedians. Meeting three times a week the Drama Society has been able to write,
design and direct their performance of Grim. They are a non-profit company who
has made their trip to Edinburgh possible through fundraising. The company is enthusiastic
and driven to continue creating innovative theatre, and hope to make their visit to The
Edinburgh Fringe a regular occurrence.
