‘Like Mother Like Daughter?’
Jana and her mum Heidi have had a 32 year long relationship. There have been highs, lows, infrequent phone calls, frequent cuttings from magazines and emails full of information about next doors cat.
Heidi is a trailblazer, a refugee from the Czech Republic in the 1940’s, her relationship with her mum was cold and tough, Millie only wanting her daughter to succeed in their new country. She never spoke to her in Czech again (and never really learnt English), and refused to ever discuss ‘home’. Heidi got into Grammar school, college, teacher training, and in the 1980’s became one of the top 5 women in PR in Europe.
Jana was born and raised in London, she was loved, cuddled, played with and read to on demand. She holidayed in 17 different countries, and failed her A Levels. After talking her way into Manchester University she then became a Can-Can dancer and activist. Having moved to New York and starting a fashion label, she then lived on a bus around Europe. She is not career orientated.
After Heidi saw a young comedian in Brighton last summer she decided she would like to have a go..and the fact that Jana has used her as comedy material for the last 5 years! So together they are making a show.. about them! Get ready for breast milk fountains, wanking, school lunches and Tres Conchas!
We want to explore these complex relationships, looking inwards, and being brave with what we find.
We are Jana Kennedy and Heidi Stransky.
Jana Kennedy is a 32 year old comedian, and performer. Shas trained in Paris in Bouffon and Clown, and uses both these devising in creating her work.
Jana is one half of emergent theatre company ‘Tall & Earnest’ which took its first show to Edinburgh this summer. A new work, devised, written and performed by the company ‘Morning Glory with Dick & Debs’ is a 50 minute clown comedy love story to daytime TV, and was supported by Matt Lucas. They are now working on their 2nd show - 'The Idiots'.
Jana is very excited to be working with her mum on this project.
Heidi Stransky is 69 and is a lady who lunches, loves gardening, Jigsaw puzzles, Sushi and action films.
She suggested that she and Jana create a stand up show together after watching a 20 year old male comedian fail to make people laugh at Brighton Fringe this summer.
She has acted in plays in her 20s and thinks she is very funny, oh and she has worked in PR for 30 years and so knows her stuff!
