Laughing Horse
first managed the Jekyll & Hyde in 2006, prior to this the venue had never been used
for Fringe shows. Situated on Hanover Street, this venue is right in the heart of the New
Town - literally just around the corner from George Street and the Assembly rooms, and a
stones throw from The Stand and Princes street. Decorated in a Gothic
style this busy bar has skeletons and related macabre items 'hanging around' the walls.
The main bar has differing balcony levels and the toilets can be found hidden behind an
imitation bookcase. The main bar serves meals and snacks all day, plus a variety of beer,
wines, spirits and horror-themed cocktails.
The performance space is located down a short flight of stairs, in 'The
Crypt' - a room decorated in the same style as the main bar, which makes it a unique,
intimate and atmospheric space for companies performing at the Fringe. Over the past years
this has become one of the rooms that is a favourite of performers, given the amazing
atmosphere in the room for performances. The venue is not a traditional Fringe room
(rectangle with a stage at the end), it has a unique atmospheric gothic feel and had two
audience spaces either side of a central bar that remains closed during the shows.
